Whoa... I am never suggesting anyone to look into 3.0. Never liked diesels anyway.

Is there any reason why they break?

Lots of stories if you search on here or Disco /RRS forums. Something to do with oil starvation?

theres not much here on our forum re these cranks failing so i wonder if its more Disco or RRS specific, slightly different engines maybe???..

As Stan says though, seems to be less of an issue with L405's than other LR vehicles - same was true for 3.6 turbo failure. Maybe something about the vehicle design, or the way they are typically driven or maintained......

They all seem to go in the same place.

But I wonder how many of these failures are down to driving style, I know manufacturing tolerances are better than they used to be and we don't know how the car has been driven from day one but both myself and my colleague have had 8 RRS/D4's between us and have never had any issues with the 3.0 V6, both of us run them in, don't thrash them from cold and change the oil in between services.

Certainly sobering seeing the picture of the crank in two pieces.

Sorry I only had limited time talking to the mech as I was paying for my MOT test, but he did tell me they had stripped it down with the intention of fitting a new crank, but they found it had “twisted “ the block, and they were waiting for a new short motor for c£5k + vat + labour.
