Trying this again ….. which diesel L322 way to go

Things to consider;

A. Mileage of c.12k per year mainly motorway and A/B roads, and occasional town/city trips
B. Maintenance and running cost allocation will be c£350/month (tax, servicing, MoT, maintenance but not fuel)
C. Needs to be a diesel as we’ve long runs to the north of Scotland to visit my in-laws.
D. Looking for rust free but not cosmetically perfect
E. Needs to be as reliable as L322’s get
F. Plan to keep it for at least 3yrs

Apologies for having to resubmit this post! Battery died the first time before the options were all added!

You can’t get a 08 4.4TDV8 they started in 2010. I think at that money you’ll be inheriting a lot of issues on a 4.4. Good examples are going for £15k +

If that’s within looking distance for you then I would definitely at least look at it.

Just a note about Autotrader........ If you're searching regularly then you likely do the same thing as me, put in the various criteria, then sort by most recent. If you've seen the one at the top of the list you've seen the rest.

But the sort-by doesnt always work properly. Last week I did so on my search and the supposedly most recent vehicle was one that I'd seen for a couple of days. Fortunately I noticed that the count of results was 1 more then it had been. About half a dozen down the list was one that I hadn't seen, phoned them up and it'd actually been online for less than half an hour. 2010 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

Did the same as Richard above.. However I was even more lucky. It had been up for 10 minutes and after 10 minutes on the phone, I'd paid a deposit.

It was literally listed on his own site and Autotrader for 20 minutes before being sold. Decent 4.4 Tdv8's really don't hang around. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Regardless of the cost, it has to be the 4.4 if you must go to a diesel. I'm not sure that the diesel is actually that beneficial with your mileage but hey ho it sounds like you've made up your mind....

Get this one, now, buy it unseen, the price is very good Wink https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic61668.html

If you are doing 12k a year mate I would deffo go for a diesel. More so if you plan to do any towing. Many people say the petrol version has gutless low down torque. Now waiting for the abuse.

I tow with a 4.2 SC and a 4.4 TDV8 and what you say is true, the SC doesn’t have the low down torque of the diesel, however, the 4.2 is quieter then the 4.4 so you don’t really notice it needing a few more revs to do the same unless you’re on a very steep incline and heavily loaded.

The 4.4 is great though, you won’t be disappointed with it.

However, in your poll I voted 3.6 purely because sinking everything you have available into a Range Rover and not leaving yourself with contingency fund isn’t a good idea in my opinion.

If you can stretch to a 4.4 and keep £1500 back to iron out any niggles that you might find then that would definitely be the way to go IMO.

What's your purchase budget?
With your running cost budget you need to be looking at very clean low mile examples so I'd say have at least £20k+ at a dealer. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

So purchase budge in total would be £8.5k but that would include any budget for repairs or maintenance. On top of that after tax my company will provide £220/month and I’m looking to top that up with c£350/month.

I suppose the biggest issue is initial lump sum but a reasonable amount for ongoing maintenance which is the dilemma in the poll.

Lastly I also don’t want a monthly financing deal for a variety of reasons! So that gives us(collective team ffrr forum 😀) the £8.5k total to work with. I’ll be looking at buying in March / April after the usual winter 4x4 higher pricing has fallen back.

I would go for option 2 with your criteria based on what info you’ve given.
A high mileage 4.4 TDV8 with no contingency fund maybe tempting fate…….maybe.
I would look for a good 3.6 on here, if one becomes available before your deadline, just buy it & stand it up at home until March or whenever. A FFRR bought from here, would probably beat any offerings from Autotrader or bay of fleas……this lot on here are as straight as a dye.
The only reason I haven’t voted for the TD6 is, you maybe very slightly disappointed in the performance, it’s a big old slug to be pulled around sensibly by a TD6 along with a 5 speed box that is somewhat fragile. Apologies to those who’ve got a TD6 FFRR (I had an X5 with the same running gear, loved it to bits though) I’m not slagging the TD6 off either.

With the maximum budget available and considering the list of requirement, I think you should forget about an L322 unfortunately. The prices don't have a winter tax, they have a general state of the market tax.

Hi Black Dog, what I meant was dealers in the UK tend to inflate prices from November to February for 4x4 vehicles, then they do the same thing with convertible vehicles between March and August/September.

The annual tax is not an issue, my wife’s Infiniti FX is in the same category £560 per year.

Also afraid it’s one of those itches that needs to be scratched!
