Hi guys really have hit a brick wall STILL having smoke and horrible fumes which is ONLY intermittent mainly when car hot but that said did a 300 miles roundtrip recently and nothing no smoke or fumes etc... had 2 garages look at it don't know where its coimg from oil cooler done all good o ring on pipe done at back of oil cooler and I been monitering there's no oil on floor driveway etc! surely this oil wouldn't take 4 weeks to burn away from back of engine doesn't it only smoke as the oil hits the exhaust as this gets hot? Any other ideas what's causing these disgusting fumes and smoke at back of engine. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

It could still be residual oil from the original leak. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

@jaysta10k - When you had the cooler replaced did you fit a JLR part or a budget part?
The bloke who fitted mine said he would have refused the job if I'd wanted a cheaper version fitted as he's had several problems with them failing very quickly.

@jaysta10k
I've been exactly where you are with the smoke fumes, I've changed every seal and gasket going in the cooler stack. Thought I'd cured it, no leaks at all, really clean, but the smell came back. Last night I spent a long time with a borascope searching for oil and found that the rear two of the four boost hoses from the dohnut had oil underneath, I fitted new ones last year so they are in good nick but I think I've been under tightening them just enough to allow a slight misting of oil to escape (at high boost) on to the hot engine.
Tightened them as much as possible, cleaned around them and took it out and got it really hot and didn't get the smell. Only one test so far but fingers crossed.

Hi @gowsh cheers for this info we have replaced the o rings on the turbo feed pipe into the back of oil cooler a few days ago with the Viton o rings the back of pipe etc seemed dry to be fair so it’s a process of elimination but very frustrating as everything pointed towards oil cooler. I will keep an eye on this next week or so and if smell and smoke is still present we will take a look at what you have suggested.
Cheers

just tightened mine up, as I had a mist of oil under mine as well - let's see if that does cure it - fingers crossed !

Hi, it's the jubilee clips on the short hoses, there's 4 of them. Feel under the hoses first to see if thers oil there, also if they are original they may be split and tightening won't help.

Hi thanks for this @gowsh thanks for this checked all jubilee clips checked all hoses no oil this is a mystery I think the only way to find out where the hell the intermittent smoke and fumes are coming from is for the car body to come off! We have explored all avenues there is one more thing to check a mechanic said he noticed a small amount of oil around turbo area so possible turbo oil leak maybe causing smoke fumes etc when hot. Any. more info from anybody else would be much appreciated.
cheers

Right guys. Looking for inspiration on this topic from you Guru’s😜.
I still have a very tiny oil leak ( small patch on the drive) although I’m not having to top up the oil as it still states ‘Full’ when checked. This has been like this for over 2 months now!!
I have changed the 2 x turbo seals at the back of the cooler, both cooler gaskets which were very brittle and cleaned the engine as best I could, checked the doughnut hoses( tight and intact) and even bought a borescope to see if the casing is cracked when hot but cannot find any trace of where it’s coming from.
I’ve had the wind deflector ( underneath) off the engine section and cleared around here. Nothing at the oil plug incidentally and nothing of note here. Just a path the oil could have taken coming from the top are of the engine. There was/ is a slight build up around the bell housing so could it be the crank seal that’s passing? Hope not as that’s something I won’t be undertaking myself.
I’m stumped now but would like to get to the bottom of it.
Anyone got any other ideas please??

Are you sure it's engine oil? I had a gearbox leak on the pan seal 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Looks like engine oil. Black in colour. Wouldn’t have thought the gearbox oil would be that colour. Haven’t checked the level as the leak looks like it’s coming further from the from the front as only the first wind deflector/ skid pan has oil on the inner surface.
I’ll check all the same so thanks for the heads up.
