Retro fitting Paddle Shift to early L322

Hi All

This is the work log for my latest project - retro fitting 2010/2011 Range Rover Paddle Shifters to my early L322 Range Rover. I would like to thank Daveo for finding the paddle shifter for this project and his help for finding really useful forum links.

We got our paddle shifts from PowerfulUK for this project

When i received the paddle shifts and took a closer look with my multimeter i found that officially the paddle shifts only support CAN BUS but with a small modification to the circut board it is possible to converter the switch into a normal open/close switch which can be spliced into the transmission control wiring under the gear shift.

This is how i did it:

This is what the paddle shift looks like removed from the steering wheel:

Remove the black plastic bung and its small clip then slide the brass pin out of the opening using a small screwdriver to easy it out:

Then release the clip next to the spring to allow the circuit board to be removed from its housing:

Next you need to remove the 2 SMALL resistors from above the red white (BE VERY CAREFUL AS YOU COULD DAMAGE THE BOARD WITH TOO MUCH HEAT FROM YOUR SOLDERING IRON!)

DO NOT REMOVE THE LARGE RESISTORS, THESE ARE FOR THE LED ONLY

Now VERY carefully create a 'bridge' between the 2 solder pads nearest the RED wire NOT the one nearest the switch:

Leave the solder pads nearest the switch clear DO NOT connect anything or any solder to these or you will create a short in the circuit.

Now repeat on the other side.

This shows both LEDs lighting the + and - symbols on the paddles:

These LEDs on the paddles are white and not green like the other LEDs in our earlier vehicles

You have now converted a CAN BUS paddle shift into a normal open/close paddle shift which can be used in the early L322 Range Rovers.

This is a video of me doing the conversion on my paddles:

VIDEO 1 - - modified circuit board

VIDEO 2 - - demo of the paddles working in the car

I will post more info about fitting these new paddles to the vehicle over the next few days.

Matt

nice one matt, i have used a small bit of green plastic from a sweet wrapper to turn it green, spot on, you will be leaving yours white i take it as you have the white led conversion on you dash, should be able to pick up a light feed in the steering wheel it self, i sent a link to simon at powerful uk as he to wants to fit them to is demo car..
just looking at my 2010 switches sitting in the box, what i would do to get them working, V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

hi matt, this has turned out to be quite an easy mod, but like you i dont want to loose my heated steering wheel
of course there still the wireless option if all else fails
need one of these, i ordered a 3 button version because i have a plan for the 3rd unused button later.

You have been busy Matt. How long did it take to strip the center console? Any ideas on how to get the wires through the wheel yet?

Centre console takes literally about 5 minutes to strip, its very easy because it has been designed very well! Just working on getting the wires through the wheel.

looks a cool little mod... Thumbs Up

So how much you doing it for and how much do land rover charge for this option... Laughing

Never had the wheel apart but looking at your vid there has got to be a way to get the wires through without losing anything. 2004 black Vogue TD6

cost is very little compared to land rover in fact you cant get paddles on early range rovers from land rover, total cost is the paddles, bit of solder, few lengths of wire and a lot of patience and time thats it.

Looking into the slip ring and its starting to look like the wireless option may be the only way, although my plan is to remove the slip ring from the car tomorrow an double check to see if there are any few connections that could be used.

Couldn't you just drill a hole and use a good length of wire with plenty of slack? Bit like the rally cars use but not dangling around?

You could use one of these onto some kind of track to make a connection. Use the crown tip, not the spear tip.

yes you will have 2 spare connectors where the heated wheel should be connected you only need 2 connectors one for the up shift one for down shift
