Mine is 235972 from May 2015 and it broke just like the others due to possible overtightening from production which caused cracks and subsequent corrosion.

Strange thing is that RR did a recall in Canada in November last year but in UK zilch!!

https://www.check-vehicle-recalls.service....13/recalls

So they are guilty in gross negligence in my case and luckily we were not injured nor did the car suffer other damage - well the strut was finished off too.

Knuckle bolt tightening

Jon Byrne wrote:
I have examined the failed hub carrier and have compared my customer’s failed part to some of the photographs provided on this forum.
When you look closely at ALL of the photographs of the failed part when the bolted part is visible, if you check the gap of the clamping piece , in all cases that I have seen, the clamp has been over pulled. You can tell this as the gap is visibly reduced. In my opinion the clamp should have a gap of around 0.9 mm, measured with a feeler blade, when the bolt is clamped to 60Nm

On all of the cases documented here, including mine, the gap is visibly reduced. In my case the gap in the failed part measures 0.4- 0.5 mm. There’s a slight difference from top

to bottom of the clamp.

I advise a quick test of the clamp is to measure the gap with a feeler gauge. If it’s less than 0.9mm have the clamp thoroughly inspected for cracks. On a lot of examples I have checked, one side of the clamp will break before the other side lets go.

Hopefully that will save some of you from suffering this catastrophic failure.

Hi Jon. I just checked mine and it is 0.4 to 0.35 mm so clearly overtightened... and this has never been touched since 2015!! Steen

Overtightened or already cracked causing the gap to close?

Already broken whilst driving so this is what i could measure after the removal of the old knuckle. when it happened on a slow right turn , there was about a third of the metal still intact. The cracks must have been developing for some time.. luckily we were not travelling at speed.. Steen

So looking at the Canada Database

https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/VRD...rn=2022668

Interesting looking at the units effected its 987 is that just Canada or Worldwide?
and corrective actions state dealer will inspect batch number stamped on casting.

So JLR know how many units are affected, know the batch number, but guess they have no idea what was put on what car? Which is strange since we live in the age of verification etc etc OEM parts! 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Measuring the gap after a failure would be inconclusive.

Maybe but it was not removed and is intact so probably quite conclusive but that is not for me to decide.

On the right (failed) unit the numbers on it are as follows:

Cast as part of the unit:

ENPSA (possibly manufacturer?)
3K185
AlSi1MgMn-T6
B
Embossed into the metal: A1

Left side as right except (intact but changed):
3K186
C
Embossed into the metal: B6

Just looking online at problems with the front knuckle yiu guys have experienced

In Jan 2022 I had this happen on the left side when I had to slowly drive up a drop kerb and the loud bang resulted on the wheel practically dislodge itself had to have this fixed privately, Land Rover part and small fortune wasn’t covered under any warranty

Today was driving at around 40mph and had to slow down to pull in and bang felt like a blow out on the right tyre almost lost the control but turns out it’s the right side one that has snapped too

Reading all these problems it is crazy dangerous this we were v lucky today and just want to mention this has happened on both mine so be really careful, it is not just a one side problem

Not sure what to do about it as mine is RR Vogue 2014 plate 90k miles but still shouldn’t do this…

Photos of both incident

Unnecessary quote removed

HI - information received from DVSA recently states that:

Quote: DVSA has investigated a number of similar reports of steering knuckle failure, concluding that a failure of the steering knuckle is a safety concern as defined within the Code of Practice. DVSA has recommended that further action (recall) is taken by the manufacturer, and we are continuing to engage with them on this topic so that a suitable agreement can be reached, and solution introduced.

Unfortunately, whilst this remains ongoing, I am unable to give you any further information. However, please be assured that DVSA are fully committed to reaching a satisfactory outcome.
End quote
So you take to your local Land Rover garage and tell them to call HQ as there is a recall for this part. I just checked the DVSA site and there is nothing live yet but this information has come from DVSA via another claimant and Land Rover is aware of this - they have been told to do something about it finally!!!! The Canada recall for 987 vehicles in January 2023 is another argument that they need to take this seriously... I enclose copy which was kindly offered by a Canadian user in this forum.
Apparently the email account is no longer working and they want communcation via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram - I posted my claim today on Facebook as a post as well as a messager via Messenger but mysteriously it no longer shows on the page.. I wonder why... I can still find the post but no longer visible...

Spoke with JLR this morning they are not aware of any problems with this issue, i told her to Google this site......

Told her am very lucky to be in one piece and looks like this is a problem that is not a one off (i have had two go on me now left and right)

Wants me to take it to local LR guys to look at but WILL NOT be covered under anything as i have not got extended warranty

More i think about it the angrier i am getting as this is a problem that they are ignoring and chances are has already cost someone's life

Has anyone got a link to DVSA complaints for this kind of thing reading above sounds like this already in motion.

All help appreciated

Thought about ringing BBC Watchdog?

If you can get enough people to join you, they'll be interested.
