The older vehicles are definitely not induction motors nor are they hall effect on level either. One of my sons cars melted the insulation on the pump wire inside the tank, that one was a brushed motor. BMW i3 Electric Car

Funnily enough anyone that has had a BMW R1200GS or Adventure will know that the older Hexhead version used to have a strip to read the fuel level rather than a float. They used to fail and one of the fixes is to actually link a piezo via two of the wires and cause a spark on the wiring inside the fuel tank to try and re-link the wires, which often worked. Scary doing it though as I have done, knowing you're creating a spark inside the fuel tank

Electrics inside a fuel tank can go spectacularly wrong. We were the first regiment to be issued with the Scorpion CVR (T) in 1973. A few weeks after they arrived, one filled up at the POL point and when the driver turned the ignition, the whole thing went bang- luckily, the blast blew him out of his hatch. All that was left was a 76mm gun lying in a puddle of melted aluminium. Turned out that the wires for the low fuel warning gizmo inside the fuel tank weren't insulated where they exited the fuel tank. Cue massive modification of all Scorpions.

OK, I'll qualify that, anything that's from this century, my previous comment is correct. Possibly some older stuff as well, I think the Discovery 1&2 had Hall effect level sensors.
