That's the rust treatment finished now:

Offside:

Nearside:

I've put the epoxy mastic on very thick so it's not the prettiest but as it's all behind the plastic covers I wasn't too concerned about that.

The jacking points on the car you can't remove easily without knocking the pin in the way. These are now not available from Land Rover so I didn't want to knock the pin into the sill. I drilled a 3mm hole in the fixing, screwed in a self tapper and grabbed the screw with a pair of pliers and hit the pliers with a hammer.

Now all I need to do is get the covers back on and start re-assembly.

I did go round all the wheel nuts with a machine polisher and whilst it was in the air on the ramp I did the exhaust tips too as it's much easier then doing it when it's on the floor!

Just need my wheels back now! Very Happy

David, probably teaching you to suck eggs but if you go in the boot side panels you can get to the double skinned rear arches and flood between them with anti rust treatment, I like the Dinitrol ML with a long application wand you can reach the whole arch. I did fatty off roader with it years ago, I saw the car a couple of years ago and it still has rust free arches.... Thumbs Up Pete

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Might as well do it justice given the wheels are all being refurbished! Very Happy

Cheers Pete, I’ll give that a go. I’ll probably use the Lanoguard I bought.

I was also going to pop the trim panel that houses the rear number plate lights off the upper tailgate and try and fill that up too. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Got the wheels back today. They’ve knocked them out of the park.

To get rid of some of the pitting on one of them they had to rub it back and powder coat it twice. They’ve also fitted the new tyres and labelled all the wheels so I know which sensor goes where.

I didn't realise that to create the shadow chrome finish they powder coat the wheel black and then build up layers of silver with spray paint before lacquering it. A lot more time involved then a basic powder coat.

Overall I’m incredibly pleased with the finish and the efficiency.

I've knackered my left shoulder this week so lifting them back onto the car is going to be fun 🙄 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

David,

You can fill the tailgate with rust preventer through the drain holes till it comes out the other drain holes...

The Lanoguard seems a good idea but IMHO I wouldn't use it in box sections, they say it needs doing every year, do it with Dinitrol and you only have to do it once... Thumbs Up

Those wheels look lovely really set it off....

BTW it doesn't matter which wheel TPMS goes where, they get picked up in the place they are fitted, swap wheels or TPMS and it learns the new location in a few miles... Thumbs Up

We need some pictures of fatty with the "new" wheels fitted Thumbs Up Bow down Pete

Managed to get an hour in this evening before Cheryl went out for the evening.

Suspension height went through a couple of cycles and I drove the car back and forth a couple of feet on the ramp to get rid of any tension in the tyre side walls after it had been jacked.

Once that was done I got my home made tool that I use to set the ride height and calibrated the ride heights. Interestingly the front was 10mm too high and the rear was 10mm too low. That's now calibrated to spec so I set the car back to standard ride height and torqued up the bolts on the wishbones.

If I can get a couple of hours tomorrow then it's getting a full service with all filters and fluids.

Got a hard deadline to get it finished by Monday evening as it's going to the specialist in Paisley for a full wheel alignment.

Right, full service complete.

It's had the front diff, rear diff and transfer box oils changed. According to the service history they were done around 30-40k ago but I like doing them myself again so at least I know they're changed. Thankfully they weren't that dirty coming out.

I drained the engine oil and removed the filter, thankfully the filter is nice and clean with no metal chips in it.

This oil filter I fitted 6 months ago...

This is the new filter I fitted on Sunday evening:

The filter I fitted 6 months ago came from Duckworth Land Rover. The filter I fitted on Sunday came directly from Land Rover Classic Parts. They have the same part number and both cost £48... the difference... it's gone from being made in the UK to made in China Censored Censored Censored Censored 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Pleased to say that the newly refurbished wheels along with the new centre caps and polished wheel nuts look superb. Scuffed in Hillington really knocked it out of the park.

I've got one more bit of bling to fit to it...

These retail are just shy of £40 and I found these on eBay for a tenner. I was skeptical at first (still am really) as metal valve caps corrode the TPMS valves so I thought I'd smear them with anti seize. Upon arrival I noticed pretty quickly that they're actually plastic.

I'm still not convinced that they're not tacky so they're still in the box at the moment.

Anyway, the car is out of the workshop, the tyre pressures are set, the ride height has been calibrated and tomorrow morning she's going in to get the alignment done. I drove it up and down the lane tonight just to make sure there's no funny noises and it became immediately apparent how good these PNCS tyres are! They are soooo quiet even at 30mph.

Anyway, in the last 3.5 weeks the car has been in the workshop, it's had all of the below:

Clean rust from wheel arches and behind sills
Treat rust on rear arches and behind sills
Galvanise primed rust on rear end
Galvanise primer jacking points
Paint jacking points and wheel arches
Refit jacking points
Shot blast and powder coat wishbones
Replaced rear lower wishbone bushes on both sides
Replaced both hub bushes on both sides
Replaced rear toe control arms
Replace both track rod ends
Strip, clean and reassemble front brakes
Strip, clean and reassemble rear brakes
Refit sill covers and replace clips
Clean rear wheel arch liners and refit
Wheels Refurbished and buckles removed from 2
4 new Pirelli Scorpion Zero PNCS tyres fitted and balanced
Fit TPMS Valve to spare tyre and code using SDD
Front & Rear Differential oil change
Transfer Box Oil Change
Engine Oil & Filter Change
Adjust sunroof as not quite sitting flush when closed
Ride height calibration

I've got a couple of little jobs to do still:

Paint the exhaust back box
Fill the rear quarter, tailgate and rear subframe with rust treatment to prevent corrosion

Really looking forward to having a good run in it again now.

That's a lot of work David, and you have made a cracking job of it. Well done indeed Sir. Thumbs Up

May I ask the cost of the wheel re-furb, please. Also, what style of wheels are they?

Cheers guys Smile

Pete - With these bits n pieces done and the new tyres on it this morning I totally fell in love with it when I took it to get aligned. I didn't get a chance to go over 35 as the route to drop the wee fella off at nursery then to the specialist is all back roads and built up.

I genuinely can't get over how different it feels with the Pirelli tyres on it compared to the Continentals that I removed. The steering feels lighter and the difference in road noise on those Noise Cancelling Pirelli tyres is incredible.

Steve - these wheels are the Land Rover Style 18 wheels in Shadow Chrome. According to the 2012MY brochure I've got here they were standard on the Autobiography. The same design was also available in a diamond cut finish which was the Style 19. These were a no cost option. I'm glad my car doesn't have them though as maintaining the diamond cut finish is a pain in the backside!

I had 5 of mine refurbished and was quoted £550. They removed buckles from 2 of them for me which added another £140 so it was essentially £700. I saved some cash as I took them bare wheels with no tyres on them and the TPMS sensors already removed from each wheel. If I'd taken them the car with the wheels on it'd have been a bit more.

Got the car back from having the alignment done today.

Every adjustment on the car is not only in the green but it's nice and central in the green at that Smile

Got a comment that it was nice to align something that wasn't seized and all the adjusters were easy to move. I had told them I'd free everything before it went in but I ended up replacing everything that gets adjusted anyway.

Looking forward to getting some miles on it now as it really feels like a different car to drive this evening.
