Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Same as Alistair here.

The nuts on my 2012 WM were replaced under warranty as had swollen within three years from new. My tyre suppliers recommend using only hand tools, say the air guns promote swelling. I also avoid chemical wheel cleaners. The foreman at the dealer reckoned that stainless steel was worse than mild for galvanic corrosion between wheel and nut, and so to avoid using stainless with alloy wheels. They are good for steel wheels eg on Defenders though. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I bought a 2017 set of genuine RR alloys for my 2005 L322 so had to replace the wheel nuts with the later 23mm diameter type. I bought the stainless steel capped nuts but 2 weeks later I had a puncture and the tyre bay used a rattle gun on the new nuts. After the event I noticed that the new nuts on that wheel were already crucified where the hammer action of the gun had rotated the outer stainless cap on the inner solid nut causing bad distorsion to the point that I had to hammer a smaller size socket onto the nuts just to remove them. I replaced the 4 damaged nuts with new. Ever since then I have never used a rattle gun on them and always torqued to 140nm and all of the nuts are still perfect after 7 years, and I swap my summer & winter wheels twice a year. So I am 100% certain that it is not corrosion or frost or anything else that kills the capped nuts, it is the dreaded rattle gun. To the extent that if a tyre bay or garage won't remove and fit by hand then I go somewhere that will.

All that being said, age is getting the better of me these days, so I am looking for a set of solid stainless nuts so that I too can use a rattle gun (and a torque wrench) without risking any damage.

I've got the solid stainless nuts, and the manufacturer states not to use a rattle gun to prevent marring them. Obviously you can but I think it would ruin the looks of them.

Thanks KevinP I will keep that in mind. I don't plan to hammer them off and on with the gun to be honest. I'll still break the torque with a bar and re-torque with a wrench but the solid nuts will be a little more forgiving so I can set the rattle gun on a low torque to run them off and back on.

Gsxr1250dave, the black nuts look good against the silver especially with the black centre cap.

I have ordered a set of solid stainless nuts now from A mazon for a reasonable price so will see what they are like when they arrive tomorrow and then order up a decent adjustable rattle gun.

Thanks for everyone's input on here. It really is a great source of info and sound advice.
