....bit tight with the battery in there....
Just checking that you're definitely testing at the transmission ECU (in the E-box) and not the transfer box ECU (behind the battery)?

If you disconnect the C1835 connector at the ECU and check continuity with a multimeter you should find that in Park there is continuity of the wiring (not the ECU pins!) between pins 1, 2, 14 & 1 ... |

You have the GM 5L40-E transmission, so the inhibitor/xyz switch is inside the transmission.

I completely agree. As you say, BMW owners don’t seem to have any issues viewing their adaption values. Very frustrating.

Unfortunately, the adaption values produced for the 6HP26X are usually complete gibberish, and totally non-existent for the 6HP28X models used in the 5.0 litre

If this is the pollution sensor, then it's mounted on the fan cowl behind the radiator.

LR049160 was used in the later L405, behind the 8-speed transmission. These are the part numbers for the L322 DD295 transfer cases:
