Loosing the will to live,

Dear god please help me !! I'm a going out of my mind little woman with a l322 that overheats when stuck in traffic!!!! I've had a new radiator, changed fluids etc even contemplated getting it blessed by a catholic priest !!! Can I possibly fit an external fan to stop this happen, I'm sick of spending money on it !! It's either that or setting fire to the fecking thing!!!

I am no expert in these, I spend my time usually in the Disco3 Forum where I am in my comfort zone, but I notice that the water pump fitted to your engine was a common BMW water pump and many of these suffered from the impellor coming loose and so not pumping properly, could this be your issue? Paul Redding

The problem is..... The wrong person is looking at the car.. Take it somewhere else. The previous 2 posts were basic first test that should have been carried out. I take it the car is ok on longer runs, it's just crawling traffic that is the problem? Previously..

Sensors checked the mechanic said it was ok but I think he just likes the colour of my cheque book! Dizzybint

Yup got it in one car is great on long runs just mega pants in traffic, I'm off to Bordeaux in it in August, well I say I am!!!, Dizzybint

No idea how far you are from Cam Tech Craig and if you are too far away, I suggest to ask the forum for a reliable mechanic in your area. To me it sounds like your technician thinks Range Rover so they must be loaded (how wrong they are, the money pours out faster than with a bloody superyacht turning us into instant paupers with a nice car).

How quickly after the cold start does the engine warm up and how long before it overheats after that ? If that is fairly quick then the thermostat is closed.

Does setting the heater to full blast heating help cooling it down (even temporarily) that could indicate thermostat closed or bad circulation of the pump (impeller issues)

Running radiator cleaner through the system could be prudent to clean any crap out although the radiator is the most likely culprit for overheating and that has been replaced.

Is your cooling fan working properly ?? When the engine is quite hot (before overheating preferably) have a look under the bonnet and see if the fan is whirring away hard.

I had a similar problem with an old Mercedes in Las Vegas years ago. Turned out be the fan, the thermocoupling failed so the fan didn't work at all. They ended up (wasn't my car) making the fan fixed as a new coupling was 600 USD ! Like your L322, it only overheated in slow traffic and nowhere else.

If you connect the vehicle to Testbook and look at the live data, the engine ECU will only open the thermostat at around 105C. This is to keep the engine as hot as possible to keep the emissions as low as possible. If the thermostat doesn't open properly, then it cannot drop the engine temperature because it cannot use the radiator.

T4 shows 2 temperatures on the M62 engine. One the main engine coolant temp and also the temperature of the coolant after the radiator. You should see the engine opening the thermostat to regulate the temperatures so as one climbs the other should drop slightly.

It just needs someone who can connect T4/Testbook or similar to check this is happening. It is the only way really.

Or the old fashioned way... Take out the thermostat, drop it in a mug of boiling water and see if it moves.. Probably better doing it the high tech way though! Previously..

If you have had fluid changed have they got all the air out properly? Use the hidden menu in he dash to get a numerical number on how hot she's getting. You can also mod the electric thermostat to be open perminantly that will reduce the overall temp by about 7-10deg.
