Thanks for the replies.

DD no oil level correct....always check after service.

NMJ I did not start the car unless I used it.Was on charger for lockdown.
The two or three times I booted it since lockdown it smoked, something it never did since I bought it nearly 4 years ago.Because of this tread I allways watched for smoke.....nothing!
When I bought the car it still had some LR warranty left and I was looking for a reason to get LR to mod,but it would not smoke Sad Sad Will use the car more over the weekend and try and get a better idea of it's behavior under hard acceleration.

If it's the drain mod needed, drive around like miss Daisy for 20 miles or so, this lets the oil build up and then when you get above 2500 rpm the oil is burned and it is quite spectacular. Mine could obliterate totally the vision behind for about 800 metres or so, an enormous amount of smoke. Once the mod was done however, it was completely clear and never smoked at all.

The two turbo's share a common drain which isn't big enough, back pressure builds up and the oil pools in the induction side of the second turbo. It sits there until you go above 2500 rpm when the second turbo comes into play and then the stored oil is dumped into the engine with staggering results that would have been good in a Bond movie (or Trotters Independent Traders Reliant for that matter).

That's my understanding, maybe someone else with greater knowledge can confirm or correct? BMW i3 Electric Car

The secondary turbo has its own drain which is emptied using a camshaft-driven scavenger pump. The pump stops as soon as the engine stops yet oil pressure to the turbo and other bearings takes a while to leak out of all the bearings. The turbo oil would normally be sucked out via the drain by the pump but the pump is stopped, blocking oil flow so oil escapes from the turbo's bearings into the inlet side, pooling until cleared when the turbo is used. When the turbo's seals are new they don't allow oil to escape but as the seals aren't designed to hold oil pressure because the drain prevents pressure build-up, as the seals wear a little they will allow oil under pressure to escape when the drain in blocked.

The revised drain has a second pipe going directly into the sump, bypassing the scavenger pump.

Oil flow into a turbo is restricted by the size of the hole in the turbo to maintain oil pressure to the rest of the engine and the turbo's drain provides virtually no flow restriction.

I bow to your greater knowledge but your explanation doesn't fit the symptoms. Without the turbo drain mod, drive for 20 or so miles below 2500 rpm and then when you go above 2500 you get the smoke screen. Without stopping drive slowly again for another 20 miles or so and the same thing happens, why doesn't the scavenge pump remove the oil successfully? Why does the second turbo need a scavenge pump rather than a return to sump?

I've never heard of a scavenge pump being used on a turbo before...... BMW i3 Electric Car

is it because that turbo is inactive below 2500 ?

. Cheers, Greg

John I thought you didn't have to worry yourself about primitive things like combustion engines anymore?

You miss your fossil fuel beast surely? Very Happy

Well this is true, it's more important how much energy I recover on a journey than anything else LOL. It's a very novel experience not going to a petrol station since February and the banks balance looks very healthy as a result. It's good fun blitzing cars from the lights too, the last loser was an Overfinch Rangie hehe, I know Im good up to 30mph, after that I'm fair game but it's usually enough to make a point LOL

It is interesting on the scavenge pump, I didn't realise it used one and in all honesty I don't see why it needs one. I don't see that as the cause for needing the drain mod though either, engine stopped = oil pressure to zero within a second or so and from my experience I could make it smoke by driving slowly for a few miles then giving it the works which dismisses the scavenge pump theory, or maybe the scavenge pump is dying and isn't doing it's job as efficiently. BMW i3 Electric Car

I’m pretty sure what the turbo drain mod does is simply give it a path back to the sump. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

This is what I am trying to figure out....why for 129k kms no smoke and now all of a sudden smokey.Wrong oil or kaput turbo seals?

I don't know enough of turbo's to analyse this. All I know is that it is going to cost a lot to fix Sad Sad 2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4

^^ Yes correct NMJ

Why they didn't just do that in the first place? No idea.
