3.6 turbo replacement

So it looks like at least one of my turbos has let go , white smoke no power and oil level has dropped significantly , question for the experts how hard a job is it to do for a competent mechanic on the drive on stands , any advice greatly appreciated.

Im sure i read a thread where one of the mechanics on here replaced one at the side of the road and think you can get to one through the wheel arch but dont know how easy it would be! Not much help really! Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Dropping subframes, dropping front diff... Pretty hardcore for a driveway job! Bow down

Turbo comes off with manifold
To allow this, the diff needs to come off
To allow this, to subframe needs to come off (as well as hubs + driveshafts)
To allow this, the steering rack needs to come off

Not a quick or easy job, but I have done 3 pairs of turbos in various customers driveways, so it is possible Thumbs Up

Thanks for the heads up , time won’t be an issue I’ll just take it steady , may have to wait for a improvement in the temperature though as it’s a bit chilly at the moment, cheers

Sorry to here about your L322.

I’m interested in turbo failures as I have one of these. Can you advise:
- how many KM
- how good is the service history
- any warning signs and
- any EGR mods or problems.

Thanks. ______________________________

148000 miles (2008 plate)
Owned by me for 3 years and serviced by me when I got it and annually
No problems with egr etc but replaced the 2 top intercooler hoses in December as one had split , when I changed them there was some oil in the inter cooler but nothing to worry about !!
As for any warnings , nothing , I’d done a 100 mile round trip the day before with no problems

I haven’t looked at it yet but when I find out exactly what’s gone on I’ll post an update

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m starting to think the bearings just wear prematurely and the fan host the sides.

I look forward to an update. ______________________________

The bearing is white metal and in theory should have an infinite life span.

(Roller bearings have a finite life)

However, if the oil supply is starved, say from sludge build up or stopping the engine whilst the turbine is still wanging round at high speed then the bearing surfaces will contact each other and wear, and as you say, eventually lead to the blades contacting the casing.

My money is on both of the above (and prolonged running with a split in the top air cooler outlet hoses, which I think can cause overspeeding).

I use an oil flush before my oil changes to (hopefully) desludge.

Pretty sure it is helping. 500 kays after my last oil change and the oil on the dipstick is still like new. 2007 3.6 TDV8

Just my experience , my 2007 had 140k miles on it, oil changed every 8 to 10k kilometres and was like new at every change. Left hand turbo snapped its shaft, luckily the snapped part fell into exhaust. I stopped the car due to amount of white smoke and had both.turbos replaced and all good. My indie dropped engine to change turbos. 2015 4.4 AB

Thanks gents. Interesting feedback. I keep wondering whether to buy spare turbos now while I have the cash. I’m sure I won’t if it happens down the track. Mine has 275,000km or 170,000miles. ______________________________

Diff and subframe didn't come off on mine im sure and i saw him daily but he did struggle getting a few bolts in though.I also covered the oil lines with a heat wrap as they run close to the turbos and was told can affect the oil feed to them.

Got the exhaust disconnected and the drivers side (right) one is full of oil the other one is dry , struggling to get the top bolts which connect the turbo to the manifold .

Inside the turbo

Inside the cat ,the turbo spins freely with no grinding or lateral movement just 2 bolts holding it on the manifold Left it several hours to get to this point any suggestions on those last 2 bolts gratefully recieved, I’ll get the other turbo out tomorrow hopefully
