Battery tightened.

Thump still there.

Don't know if I am disappointed or relieved!

Check the alignment of the compliance bush - if it is misaligned, then that will give these symptoms.

At normal road height, the flat should be parallel, but if someone has tightened it in the air, then it will not be. Had this on my last FF after they did the diff recall, which involves removing the bushing.

Did both the upper and lower arms last week, bushes tightened when back on it's wheels.

New strut going on tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Good news: Strut was goosed. When we finally (*) got the strut off and layed it on its side, oil from the shock started pouring out of the airbag connection. Shock seals must have gone.

Bad news: Knock still there.

It is MUCH better, whereas before it was so bad I felt the need to explain and apologise to passengers, now I almost have to go looking for a pothole to make it knock, but knock it does. Someone less anal than me could probably convince themselves to ignore it, however...

Had all the undertrays off last night.

No dead cat Thumbs Up

A/R bushes tight, no movement.

All subframe bolts tight.

Steering rack bolts tight.

No movement in gearbox or engine mounts.

I'm starting to suspect (because it's the last bit left connected to the front wheel that isn't new!) the steering rack.

There are a couple of posts here and elsewhere where a front end knock has been attributed to the rack.

However, it's eye-wateringly expensive from LR, and just plain expensive elsewhere, so I would like a bit more confidence before subjecting myself to more open wallet surgery.

* Strut change pretty straightforward.

Lower bolt through the hub was very tight to remove. Was looking pretty sorry once we had battered it out, but fortunately local Indy (Aylmer Motor Works, Nr Hatfield Herts) came up trumps with one in stock. If I ever do the other side I will make sure I have a spare before starting.

Airline connections to the transfer valve on a 2005 SC a bit different to that show in the RSW videos or Joe's post, only 3 connections, near side is the black connection.

Had a bit of a fright, as had to reconnect the battery to turn the steering wheel after we had depressurised and disconnected the airline and height sensor.

Car started to air up, and it took me a few seconds to get the battery off again.

Was fearing a suspension fault code, but nothing materialised!

Check your rear hub bushes top and bottom i bet there perished and they do give the inpression that a front shock is not attached to anything onto no6 Range Rover

Just confirm:



These bushes 5K792A and 3050A in the REAR hub.

Would swear blind knock is from the front, but pretty close to breaking point now and willing to look into all suggestions (except for dead cats).

Did you ever find out what was causing this knock?? I have exactly the same knock on my front suspension on the passenger side. I've spent a fortune trying to get rid of it. It started when I replaced the front passenger side air strut for a new one. Went for a test drive and first heard the knocking. I've replaced both sides upper and lower hub bushes, this didn't work then the anti roll bar drop links, no luck with that either. I've checked every bolt on the new strut & had the car on a ramp and it's still knocking, it's driving me mad, literally.

Anyone know of anything else to try??

Not fixed, still knocking.

Still suspecting steering rack at this point.

Maybe best if you bite the bullet, get the rack swapped, and come back and let me know how you got on!
