Hi all, I've got a very small YouTube channel called 'Woody's Secret Garage' and would like to do some brief interviews with owners of 2017 and later cars who have had this issue.

My goal is to raise awareness of this issue and ask people to log cases of cracked knuckles with DVSA with the intention of getting JLR to extend the 2014-2016 recall N759 to later vehicles.

I appreciate this won't happen overnight but some testimonials from owners who have had this issue will certainly help get the word out.

There isn’t a recall at all for any L494, so that might also be an avenue, ie not just 2017 onwards….

G'day - I've been watching this topic for quite while. My thoughts are the pinch bolt set up is fundamentally flawed and JLR's replacement knuckles don't appear much different from ones that have failed. I find it baffleing but not surprising how badly JLR are approaching such a potentially deadly scenario...

The recall VIN range is too narrow with many models produced years after the recall suffering

Understanding it is a fairly rare failure but an unpredictable one the many of us may have just waiting to fail.

Short of fabricating or machining a better design I've done a bit of doodling on CAD and come up with a modification idea - won't be everyones cup of tea as it will need to be done to a perfecly good set of knuckles that haven't failed, however, it is only just a thought as this stage.

It will require two very carefully 6mm holes bored into the boss ears through the pinch bolt boss ears and sleeves slipped in and then the plates and 4mm bolts fitted- holes drilled will the boss is dummy clamped.

Yep - can't argue with that. There's probably not an engineer in the world that would sign off on it but there was probably a dozen that looked the original knuckle and gave it the nod

I've seen a lot of pictures of broken knuckles and it is obvious to me that the gap between the two sides of the pinch bolt is only about half the size of mine (which is too old to be recalled)

Could it be the gun used to tighten this bolt on the production line was set wrongly and the bolt is too tight, hence the cracks...

Maybe if you have a later one that they are not going to change it would be a god idea to remove the bolt. clean it all up the best you can, and refit it and re torque the bolt

I keep a good look at mine and as I've just written the above I have obviously jinxed it and it will fail soon...!! Pete

Could be on to something there Pete…. Who knows the torque setting?….. my neighbor had a slight crack in his and it failed when they were taking the bolt out he said…. Perhaps they should have put a spacer in…..

Shame LR don’t share proper info, as it’s not something you need failing…..

This is from the TOPIX instruction for carrying out the recall. It mentions 40nm + 30 degrees.

I noticed the workshop manual mentioned 60nm.

The gap will reduce once the casting is cracked.

I suspect that a joint dissassembly and good clean-up at the slightest sign of corrosion in the area or on the casting anywhere might be worthwhile. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims

Definitely seen several with just a small crack, no detached part, and the pinch bolt gap appears smaller... Pete

Thanks Woody, for the new torque setting. I did not have that to hand when I did this last year. Which I torqued up to 45Nm (went with the feel of the hand sort of thing). I got one more to do this summer.

I guess us L494 owners are in for a long wait....
At least they fixed my 405, always handy to have a backup when owning a JLR product  L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

… and today JLR have requested my L405 2017 knuckle for ‘destructive testing’ following the serious safety defect I raised with VOSA. Tiny baby steps in the right direction, perhaps.
