Definitely worth trying the switch before going any further.

I tried it first on mine and got nowhere with it. I might still have the switch I bought somewhere.

The car I had the fault on was a 2007 car which didn't have that sleeve around it.

The other side of that goes over to the other side of the car from memory so would be quite a pain to remove.

On mine there was no visible break in the cabling, it was more noticeable as a swelling in the cable under the insulation and when I touched it, it fell apart.

That's where the corrosion on mine was Thumbs Up I managed to access the bad part of the wiring on mine through the rear wheel arch. It was tight for access but it was easy enough to sort.
