do you think that swapping only the part ,as in video, can be done while column is on or one way or another upper steering column must first be removed.

Good day to all

Defective solenoid already off from steering column.However from what i have seen believe i will not be able to change magnets which already ordered from the states.
Wondering if any DIY instructions available or any pm of someone who can undertake magnets replacement.

Next task is to check motor.Hope to split white housing without breaking it.

To change the magnet is a two minute job, remove the circlip, (red arrow) use tweezers and pull off all the bit's of the old magnet (yellow arrow, this one is not broken, yours will be broken if it needs changing) then put the new magnet in and replace the circlip.....



Use four slim wedges, where I indicated in the earlier pictures, to pry off the white housing tabs, it's a bit fiddly but easy enough, if the housing does break then you can glue it back together if you're careful and don't glue up the internals, as long as the bottom half stays fixed to the housing you will be OK...

Not sure if mine has this issue now too. Fecking car loves finding stuff to get replaced weekly.
Symptoms- car unused for 3 weeks due to MOT dispute/issues. Now sorted but when I lock or unlock the car the indicators no longer flash. Key is a bit sticky in the ignition but starts . Battery and alternator are working perfectly. Any ideas

just for everyone awareness: whenever I leave the car for couple of days (so to say week) and battery gets little weak I got intermittent problems with steering lock.

Second time I've got this resolved with fully charging battery. Most likely the solenoid movement is bit of obstructed and if not used or weak battery then is not able to move.

Bodge fix

Well yesterday I suffered the solenoid failure, the fuse 18 pull/replace worked a few times then stopped working so I followed the info in this: http://l322rangerover.blogspot.co.uk/2017/...eaded.html and hey presto I'm mobile again, albeit with a couple of sewing pins floating around.

I have ordered a monentary switch 12V Momentary Push Button Horn Switch OFF (ON) Car Dashboard Boat SPST
( eBay Item No. 261161661277 ) and a timed relay TIMER SWITCH TIME RELAY 1 TO 40 SEC MINI SMD KIT 10A Delay Off 12V - UK seller
( eBay Item No. 222433474318 to experiment with. Just happy to not have to spend 3.5K on a column.

In the end to solve my steering column lock problem, I removed the steering column and sent it away to Turner Diagnostics, apparently the only people in the world that can fix this problem. They fixed it and it's been perfect ever since. Cost me around 700 quid though, more than it should have because a land rover specialist drilled a hole in the column to squirt wd40 in, according to Turner Diagnostics that is a big no no.

"only people in the world that can fix this problem" ..... perhaps in GB, but in rest of the world they send it to Düsseldorf in Germany, official can repair, 700 GBP is correct Price. We drive to the clients in radius of 200km, repair, all.incl. 900 Euro. We repair from 2002 to 2009, four hours working.

Well there are two local garages here in Dubai that have figured out a workaround on this problem without replacing the steering column. I know two people who have had their 2003s fixed there. I had the chance to interrogate one of the vehicles with a iCarsft 930 scanner.

The steering ECU seems to have been disabled or bypassed as the scanner cannot communicate with it, it cannot even communicate with the steering wheel angle sensor.

I tried to open the steering column nacelle and have a look inside but those three Censored all torx screw are of some weird side and I tried to sets of torx driver and could get them to open so had to halt operations.
Anyways maybe someone smarter than me can use this info and try to figure out a work around ?

I've had this issue with mine since I bought it, but the fuse 18 thing is working for now. I'm not too worried as I have a functioning steering column on my donor 2005.

James messaged me to say he bought an emulator and fitted it, his key will turn but his FF will not start, he contacted the seller who said this...

"HINT - if key turns, but there is no start allowed: find wire directly coming from EWS to ESL (P/N signal, wired through ESL) and short it to +12v. Or recode EWS to ignore this wire (on most cars it is ignored by default)."


EWS is immobiliser and ESL is electric steering lock, we presume P/N is park neutral switch but I thought that went to the gearbox ECU and not the immobiliser...!!!!

Anyone tried this or got an emulator to work.... or can programme a EWS to ignore it...?????

I did get the emulator to work but had to bridge pins 3 and 5 in order to pass through the park/neutral signal.

I just fixed a 2008 by a simple wire bridge.

I took the knee light out of the panel and figured out which of the two wires is the power wire.
Then I ran a wire from there up to the steering column.
I cut the blue wire at the number one pin on the connector and joined the wire from the light.
Whenever the interior light is on you can turn the key. Because of the built in delay, it gives time to get in and shut the door, then turn the key.
Once the light goes out the solenoid is then depowered, but it doesn't matter as the key has been turned by then.
Worst case scenario if the interior light goes out, either open the door again to trigger the light, or manually turn the interior light on to allow the key to turn.
Simple, effective and cheap.
