Pete, did I send you the link to the US magnet supplier? I can't find it in my email but would be happy to post here if I can remember your email address to search for!

Thanks Pete, found the message. This was the info I'd found:

Follow the instructions in this PDF to dismantle the ECU casing to get at the solenoid:

http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/photos/L322lock.pdf

Then read this thread on the magnet fix.. the part numbers etc are spread between posts so there's a bit to read. Some have tried lubricating the solenoid with little or only temporary success.

Magnet is here:

Thanks very much for the link dingg - have you tried that method? Mine is 2007, it seems odd if the column lock has changed from earlier models it still suffers from the exact same problem. I have never experienced it or heard of it on any other car.

hi

no I haven't tried the jumper switch idea , mine has been sorted with drilling the casing and lubing with silicone lubricant , if it fails completely I will try the method of fitting a push button switch into those pinouts in the link I last posted , as it appears to be the easiest fix.

This method of disconnecting the module does work and is easy. I tried with 2 needles and shorted the 2 pins together and I could start the car fine. Im not sure what to do next - can I leave these 2 wires shorted permanently, will that drain the battery or do I need a switch. Im certainly not driving around with 2 sewing needles stuck a few inches above my knee Very Happy I need something more permanent.

It was also frustrated when I removed the steering column shroud - it's very well built behind there and screwed together very solidly better than other vehicles I have seen - all the more frustrating that it's suffering from these issues.

I would wire in a rocker switch permanently to those pin positions and locate the switch under the column shroud so its invisible to everyone - glad to hear it works could save a lot of faffing about and expense

My steering lock failed open.Right now for starting car i have to first remove fuse 18.
Jumpering pins 1-7 (connector c2055) seems quite easy job and ok upto here
however what i cannot understand the following suggestion:
"If you want to keep the "normal" behaviour, a timer relay wired to the interior lights would be your best bet."

As i am totally ignorant would please someone explain to me how this can be done.

Many thanks

@Haylands, the solenoids had arrived, many thanks. Normal I would buy them also in US, but they want 20$ shipping.....

the only corect way to solve this common problem is to build out the column, and remanufacture the Solenoid and the White-housed Motor. Also remanufacure the electronic platine.

By reading better thread i saw that pinning of 1 and 7 of c2055 can have an effect only to non bmw models. Big Cry

Googling around have found in a us land rover forum owners with steering column problems to mention "www.advancedkeys.com" which seems to be quite interesting solution as escape from need to buy a replacement steering column and face similar problems in future.
Its a keyless entry kit and the ak-105s which i am looking for gives you the ability let key, with a nice and easy conversion, ALL THE TIME IN IGNITION SWITCH,which solves turning key problems.

Supplier confirms that kit is fully compatible with RR,at least mine which is model 2004 and is straight forward installation. In cost terms is much cheaper than to buy a used steering column.
My steering lock has stucked in open position.
Wondering whether with defective steering lock as mine if there is any possibility while driving status of steering lock to change and lock???or locking during driving cannot be done.

Any comments and how such an installation sounds to site experts will be much appreciated????????

Yep, jumping pins only works with the later models...

The keyless start kits leave the RFID in the key next to the ignition all the time... starting will work (although I don't see how they bypass the immobiliser??) BUT, if you leave the RFID next to the pickup around the ignition key you can't lock the door as it thinks you have left a key inside the car....

They say it is compatible with the FF but that is different from "working as it should" when it doesn't work they will just say it's your fault... they keep your money... check out these things very thoroughly first and ask for references....

Also without all the factory fit anti theft stuff your insurance company won't be too happy....!! Pete

AFAIK it's all plug and play, no ECU's in it, just motors, solenoids and a few other unreliable items...... Rolling Eyes

Good luck.... Thumbs Up Pete
