I was looking at this tool on eBay.

If I used this very lightly on the cylinder walls would it be sufficient, as currently as mentioned we have cross hatched visible. Perhaps a small use of this tool will be sufficient to ensure good bedding in. I will order new rings. Thanks Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info. We haven't touched the timing on the block or the RH cylinder head. Therefore this should aid in ensuring all is good for our LH cylinder head. If the RH and block are timed and secured correctly using the tools. Then when we put on the LH head and fit the tool (it only goes on one way) we should be timed!! PS I will follow your instructions to ensure we are right!

Don't forget with TDC on the compression stroke the intake and exhaust valves are both closed. With TDC on the exhaust stroke the intake and exhaust valves are both partially open...

Personally I'd want to examine the bores that the second hand piston came out of, if it is pristine then I'd use the piston and rings as they are... if you can't examine the bores I'd use new rings and hone the bores as I said above... I certainly wouldn't hone the bores and use second hand rings..

You will get all sorts of conflicting advice which just goes to show there is no exact answer, you are doing something that is frowned upon, using second hand parts inside an engine is not a normal procedure... you will have to make your own mind up which advice to follow...

I'm following your advice. Today I ordered some new pistons rings. Likewise, I am going to hone both of the bores. Better to walk on the side of caution when it comes to this type of thing...

This type of input is invaluable. Thumbs Up

... and yes, thus far luck has been far away. But alas could be much worse!! It's only mechanical.

So guys. I've been slowly making progress on my engine. We've honed the bores on cylinder number 2 & 4. It quickly brought the old cross hatch pattern back up.

We installed the new piston rings on each of the pistons and reinserted them back into their correct spaces. Then we hit a snag, we don't have a torque wrench which goes to 5N or anywhere near it. The manual recommends this as the first of three stages of tightening the cylinder head bolts. So we have decided to order one and wait.

Also, the gasket which I ordered earlier in the summer appears to be the incorrect one, as we received two multiple LH ones, so we also will have to wait on that, along with the oil sump gasket!

In the mean time we have timed the engine as seen in the photos. All in all, it's going well!

How is everything looking from the above picture?

When you rotate the engine to the point whereby the special tool can be inserted on the cylinder head(One which we didn't remove or touch) and the tool can be inserted into the block this is the only point this can happen.

To my mind, I could be wrong is it correctly timed if we put the other cylinder head on with it set with the special tool in place?

Also meant to confirm:

The replacement head is from a Range Rover Sport.

My car is an L322 Full Fat.

There isn't any difference (with the cylinder heads) is there?
Will be putting on when the gasket arrives.

Ignore my last post! I checked back and I asked the same question in May!

As I thought everything is the same in terms of block and heads.

Sump is different as is wiring and bolt on items.

Hey Guys.

So another update.

We put the new cylinder had onto the block and installed the cams at the 12 O clock position. We then put on the chain and tightened the tentioner.

However, after two or three manual rotations it looks like the timing was off by one tooth on the gear.

We will go back to it next week and attempt to move the chain backwards one gear. This, hopefully should ensure both cylinder heads stay timed together after each revolution. Better get it wrong here, than when it is started!!!

What do ye all think?

She's timed! Was one tooth out of the gear.

All working well now.

Now to bolt more items on!

Does anyone know the torque ratings for the caps on the crankshaft?

Good job, I take it you have turned the engine through several complete revolutions with no locking up and the marks realigning...??

Can't help with the torque setting, ring a dealer, ask for the workshop manager and ask him... Thumbs Up Pete
